Ballyhooly Main St. - Late 1880s Source |
The Primary Valuation was the first full-scale valuation of property in Ireland. It was overseen by Richard Griffith and published between 1847 and 1864.
A search of this document reveals one enterprising lady - Ellen Gowen of Ballyhooly.
She is recorded as living on Main St in Ballyhooly, Fermoy. The property (a 'house, office and yard') is owned by the Earl of Listowel.
What is interesting is that her name re-appears again - but spelt as 'Gowan' as a landlord for three properties on the same road, occupied by:
- James Sullivan
- Matthew Daly
- and an unoccupied dwelling
This sounds like an enterprising lady - do you know any more about her?
