There seem to be several links between the Gowen and Keating families, both originally from County Cork. There is a large contingent of Keatings in and around Fermoy in County Cork.
John Gowen - the patriarch of the Ballyhindon Gowens - was born in Cappagh in 1814 and died in 1897 in Ballyhindon. At some stage he married Bridget Sullivan Keating (nee Sullivan), who had previously been married to Thomas Keating. This previous marriage that produced four children: James Keating, John, Bridget and Elizabeth.
James Keating emigrated to New York City, fought in the Civil War and possibly died age 50 in Manhattan in New York City in 1896.
Separately, in 1868 in Manhattan or Brooklyn, New York, a John Keating (could it be the brother of James?) stood as naturalization witness to a Patrick Gowen. At that time John Keating was living at 35 Goeric St.
