William Gowen (1894 - ?) Goes to America from Ballyhindon

Many of the County Cork Gowens emigrated to America. William Gowen was one of those coming from Ballyhindon.

As quoted by RootsWeb, William Gowen was born June 5, 1894 at Ballyhindon, Fermoy, County Cork, according to U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization records. The census of 1911 shows him as 16 years old in Ballyhindon - a 'farmer's son', part of a family of 7 including father Michael (56), mother Bridget (50) and siblings Laurence, Mary, Kate and James.

He arrived in New York City August 22, 1927 and was naturalized May 1, 1933 at the District Court of New York, Southern District. At that time William Gowen was residing at 75 W. 92nd Street, New York.

Family gossip was that 'Uncle Bill' Gowen was involved with the IRA and had to leave Ireland (after the Civil War). He is supposed to have returned to Ireland later in ill health.
